Ghana’s Independent Tax Appeal Board Visits Nigeria for Study Tour of the Tax Appeal Tribunal

The Federal Ministry of Finance has welcomed a high-level delegation from the Independent Tax Appeal Board (ITAB) of Ghana on a three-day study visit to Nigeria’s Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT). The visit aims to strengthen tax dispute resolution systems and deepen fiscal cooperation within the West African sub-region.

Led by ITAB Executive Secretary Mr. Mohammed Kofi Twumasi Nayyar, the delegation expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s hospitality and the opportunity to learn from the Tribunal’s structure and operations. Mr. Nayyar noted that the TAT has set strong precedents some affirmed by the Supreme Court which Ghana hopes to study as it prepares to fully operationalize its own appeal board in December.

During the visit, the Honourable Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to improving regional cooperation and strengthening fiscal institutions. She highlighted the Tax Appeal Tribunal’s critical role in protecting compliant taxpayers, promoting transparency, and ensuring fairness within the tax system.

Dr. Uzoka-Anite emphasized that collaboration between neighbouring countries enhances investor confidence, reduces the cost of capital, and supports economic growth across West Africa. She also underscored the importance of greater digitalization in tax processes as a pathway to improved efficiency and transparency.

The study tour marks another step in Nigeria and Ghana’s efforts to harmonize tax dispute resolution standards and reinforce fiscal governance. Both countries remain committed to advancing reforms that contribute to sustainable economic development across the region.
